Convenient, sequential organization begins with a look at the history and classification of channel models and builds from there.

I like Proakis’ writing (and his co-authors) because it is perfectly the right amount of words to convey the ideas thoroughly, at least for the most part. This book is the deepest you’ll get into the theory, so it should sit on your shelf as one of the advanced deep-dives because it will focus on the mathematics but not give you the intuition. This book is excellent AFTER you have acquired some intuition through other means. Then coming back to this book is a very interesting. It is used very heavily in universities, and that’s fine for very advanced courses, but the first steps in learning digital communications should be with other books and PRACTICAL exposure- like get a book on MATLAB Simulink modeling (Proakis actually has a good MATLAB book). The best textbook to learn this stuff from I think is Sklar’s book. It is wonderfully clear and the mathematical excursions are kept simple to emphasize the big picture. Too many US universities are using dated conventional approaches to teaching theory-first hands-on later. That doesn’t help prepare students for hitting the ground running when they go out and are working- actually implementing this stuff in FPGAs. Flip the order. Practical hands-on, then theory. They’re equally critical. Aside from the absurd pricetag (what the heck is going on with US publishers inflating the prices on books? Shameful.) I’d recommend definitely getting this book at some point if you are going to work in the field.

Then it introduces the basics of CMOS circuits (inverter analysis) and covers the aspects of digital integrated design such as parastic analysis, logic families, memories, timing and complex architectures etc… The real world design, challenges and technologies are also given in the book through articles, discussions, problems and examples. It gives a good background and teaches the concepts so a designer would be able to choose a correct design paramaters, logic/arch. family and targets such as power/performance/noise/area.

The book does not go deep in to each subject since its intention is intro/intermediate. Also this book is not for serious circuit designers but its a start book to make one. Its the book to learn and broaden your knowledge on designing custom and high performace circuits.. The cons of this book would be that its not a user friendly at the beginning for a fresh starter but it will welcome and get you going pretty quick once you get the style of the author. I would recommend the Uyemura’s book (CMOS Logic Design) for uncovered and extra examples to complete this book. And if you are looking more to designing complex high performance circuits, Chandrakasan’s book (Design of High-Performance Microprocessor Circuits) would be the one.

I think that is unfair to give such a low rating. This revision has quite new comments and examples for most of the chapters.
Definitely, the revision is not going to be completely a new book.
Compared to other revised analog circuit books from other authors, this Dr. Razavi’s book provides quite a good revision.
I recommend to purchase this revised book.

About the Author

Behzad Razavi received the BSEE Degree from Sharif University of Technology in 1985 and the MSEE and PhDEE Degrees from Stanford University in 1988 and 1992, respectively. He was with AT&T Bell Laboratories and Hewlett-Packard Laboratories until 1996. Since 1996, he has been Associate Professor and subsequently Professor of Electrical Engineering at University of California, Los Angeles. His current research includes wireless transceivers, frequency synthesizers, phase-locking and clock recovery for high-speed data communications. and data converters.
