I like Proakis’ writing (and his co-authors) because it is perfectly the right amount of words to convey the ideas thoroughly, at least for the most part. This book is the deepest you’ll get into the theory, so it should sit on your shelf as one of the advanced deep-dives because it will focus on the mathematics but not give you the intuition. This book is excellent AFTER you have acquired some intuition through other means. Then coming back to this book is a very interesting. It is used very heavily in universities, and that’s fine for very advanced courses, but the first steps in learning digital communications should be with other books and PRACTICAL exposure- like get a book on MATLAB Simulink modeling (Proakis actually has a good MATLAB book). The best textbook to learn this stuff from I think is Sklar’s book. It is wonderfully clear and the mathematical excursions are kept simple to emphasize the big picture. Too many US universities are using dated conventional approaches to teaching theory-first hands-on later. That doesn’t help prepare students for hitting the ground running when they go out and are working- actually implementing this stuff in FPGAs. Flip the order. Practical hands-on, then theory. They’re equally critical. Aside from the absurd pricetag (what the heck is going on with US publishers inflating the prices on books? Shameful.) I’d recommend definitely getting this book at some point if you are going to work in the field.
