Don’t expect it to hold your hand through everything though, a general knowledge is necessary. You’ll probably still need to go to class and won’t be able to breeze by just reading this book.

At first I was unsure whether this version of the text would meet my needs for the class because the class required the hardbound copy. This book is perfect however and a low cost alternative to a depreciating investment.

This review is regarding this edition of this book (Engineering Mechanics: Statics by J. L. Meriam, L. G. Kraige).

I normally do not review items on amazon, but I felt compelled to give this book a good review when I saw all the negative reviews of this book by people who need to have their head examined.

I am currently a Teaching Assistant and PhD student that has taught statics. I have used Beer and Johnston (B&J) and I have used Meriam Kraige (M&K). I completely disagree with the negative reviews of this book. Since most courses use the newest versions of B&J, I would recommend to students that they buy an older edition of M&K and the edition of B&J required for their course and sell back B&J at the end of the semester/quarter.

In the problem sets, students are exposed to the applications of statics from a wide variety of fields. The same cannot be said for B&J While challenging, the practical nature of these problems helps to keep students motivated and prepare them for future courses in dynamics, strength of materials, stress/structural analysis, machine design, etc. The visual illustrations and typographic quality of this book is far better than what is found in B&J. The writers of this book, Dr. James Lathrop Meriam and L.G. Kraige are award winning authors who have been recognized for their contributions to engineering education. This becomes evident when you actually read the textbook.

1.) Statics is meant to be a rigorous course in order to prepare students for upper level courses. Any instructor that doesn’t teach the course with that mindset is doing the students a disservice.
2.) Courses have prerequisites for a reason. If a student does not understand the prerequisite material (Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Introductory Newtonian Physics) they should take the course at a later date.
3.) If you can do the challenging problems from this textbook without an equation sheet , you should be able to get an A in your statics course.
