Empires of light: Edison, Tesla, Westinghouse, and the race to electrify the world by Jill Jonnes pdf free download

Description:

In the final decades of the nineteenth century, three brilliant and visionary titans of America’s Gilded Age—Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla, and George Westinghouse—battled bitterly as each vied to create a vast and powerful electrical empire. In Empires of Light, historian Jill Jonnes portrays this extraordinary trio and their riveting and ruthless world of cutting-edge science, invention, intrigue, money, death, and hard-eyed Wall Street millionaires. At the heart of the story are Thomas Alva Edison, the nation’s most famous and folksy inventor, creator of the incandescent light bulb and mastermind of the world’s first direct current electrical light networks; the Serbian wizard of invention Nikola Tesla, elegant, highly eccentric, a dreamer who revolutionized the generation and delivery of electricity; and the charismatic George Westinghouse, Pittsburgh inventor and tough corporate entrepreneur, an industrial idealist who in the era of gaslight imagined a world powered by cheap and plentiful electricity and worked heart and soul to create it.

Edison struggled to introduce his radical new direct current (DC) technology into the hurly-burly of New York City as Tesla and Westinghouse challenged his dominance with their alternating current (AC), thus setting the stage for one of the eeriest feuds in American corporate history, the War of the Electric Currents. The battlegrounds: Wall Street, the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, Niagara Falls, and, finally, the death chamber—Jonnes takes us on the tense walk down a prison hallway and into the sunlit room where William Kemmler, convicted ax murderer, became the first man to die in the electric chair.

Empires of Light is the gripping history of electricity, the “mysterious fluid,” and how the fateful collision of Edison, Tesla, and Westinghouse left the world utterly transformed.

Getting started in electronics by Forrest M. Mims III pdf free download

Getting started in electronics by Forrest M. Mims III pdf free download

Description:

This is a complete electronics course in 128 pages! Author Forrest Mims teaches you the basics, takes you on a tour of analog and digital components, explains how they work, and shows you how they are combines for various applications. Includes circuit assembly tips and 100 electronic circuits and projects you can build and test.

I cannot overstate the impact this book has had in my life.

My dad bought me a copy of this book when I was in 7th grade.

22 years later, I’m working in the electronics industry, and I keep my original copy handy for reference or explaining electronics concepts, and I regularly buy additional copies to give to coworkers and friends who need a crash course in electronics. There are some other books (_The Art of Electronics_ for instance) that I hold almost as dearly, but while I’m sure people can come up with flaws in this book, it’s been on my shelf for more than half my life.

It literally got me started in electronics.

I read this book when I was 10. I went on to college and got a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and work in the industry. Never in my education and experience have I run across a better book on electronics. It is very limited on math and won’t teach you how to solve circuits, but it will give you a conceptual framework that helps the math make sense.

The book has lots of practical examples that you can implement to get the “feel” of electronics. Many of these exercises are ones that folks in the industry haven’t managed to do and it shows in their work. This should be everyone’s first book on electronics.

Slightly longer: My professor for Electrical Circuit Analysis I told us that many people who take the class seek an alternate means to learn the material while still using the assigned textbook for homework problems.
I picked up Schaum’s Outline of Basic Circuit Analysis as my alternate method to understanding.

The writing is excellent, the problems have full step-by-step descriptions of every number derived from the problems, and I would not have understood the in-class material without it.

If you want a clear cut way to understanding Circuits, DOWNLOAD THIS BOOK.

Signals And Systems Solution Manual by A V Oppenheim A S Willsky pdf free download

Signals And Systems Solution Manual by A V Oppenheim A S Willsky pdf free download

Description:

Signals And Systems Solution Manual by A V Oppenheim A S Willsky pdf free download.

This authoritative book, highly regarded for its intellectual quality and contributions provides a solid foundation and life-long reference for anyone studying the most important methods of modern signal and system analysis. The major changes of the revision are reorganization of chapter material and the addition of a much wider range of difficulties.

I have just used this text in teaching a second-year Signals and Systems course. Yes — the students have struggled with the course, and several of them have grumbled about the book. However, none of the adverse comments I’ve received about the book either from my students or other reviewers here seem to be valid. The possible exception is the lack of more worked examples or at least answers to end of chapter problems.
The book is an excellent basic introduction to the subject. It takes what can be a very difficult subject for students and provides a relatively clear path through the material. It doesn’t assume very much mathematical background in the sense that there are plenty of very elementary problems in chapter one to remind you of the basics that you need for the rest of the book. Obviously if students have trouble with these problems they need to consider additional study to fill in some of the gaps in their knowledge on the mathematics side.

From the Publisher

This comprehensive exploration of signals and systems develops continuous-time and discrete-time concepts/methods in parallel — highlighting the similarities and differences — and features introductory treatments of the applications of these basic methods in such areas as filtering, communication, sampling, discrete-time processing of continuous-time signals, and feedback. Relatively self-contained, the text assumes no prior experience with system analysis, convolution, Fourier analysis, or Laplace and z-transforms.

The Body Electric: Electromagnetism and the Foundation of Life by Robert Becker, Gary Selden pdf free download

The Body Electric: Electromagnetism and the Foundation of Life by Robert Becker, Gary Selden pdf free download

Description:

The Body Electric tells the fascinating story of our bioelectric selves. Robert O. Becker, a pioneer in the filed of regeneration and its relationship to electrical currents in living things, challenges the established mechanistic understanding of the body. He found clues to the healing process in the long-discarded theory that electricity is vital to life. But as exciting as Becker’s discoveries are, pointing to the day when human limbs, spinal cords, and organs may be regenerated after they have been damaged, equally fascinating is the story of Becker’s struggle to do such original work. The Body Electric explores new pathways in our understanding of evolution, acupuncture, psychic phenomena, and healing.

Here is a dedicated surgeon who spent three decades doing the step-by-step research necessary to determine what causes limb regeneration. During those years he and his colleagues had to run interferance against the most hideously uninformed, petty, self-serving agencies and beaurocracies, which are often made up of other scientists. Dr. Becker was studying something very important, and his conclusions flew in the face of the conventional views of science at that time, and also of today. He was way ahead of his time.
One of the most important parts of the book was the information on how we are bombarded every day by electromagnetic radiation which has proven to be harmful, but which is DENIED harmful because of economic interests. Studies showing it is harmful are delayed or buried. As a result of this radiation across America, people suffer from all sorts of ailments that doctors are unable to diagnose.

Currently reading this book right now. More thoughts to come, but the book is absolutely amazing so far!

Use the speakers with the flattest frequency response.

This isn’t actually the most important thing when working under budget constraints, because your ear can adapt to a speaker’s frequency balance quite readily. When you’ve not got much money to buy monitors for mixing, a flat frequency response is much less critical than good time-domain response. Indeed, the two most celebrated mixing speakers of all time, the Yamaha NS10 and the Auratone 5C Super Sound Cube, both have extremely uneven frequency-response plots, but excellent time-domain performance.
