Carpenter, who attended one of Ray’s clinics. He tells amazing stories that Ray might not tell about himself and summarizes the whole philosophy in a clear and objective way. Also included is a question and answer section, in which a number of the most commonly asked questions are answered in detail. And throughout the entire book runs the simple, basic idea: think harmony.

Exellent book for those who understand the simplicity of dealing with horses in this way. Having a friendship and clear communication on the smallest level applies to everything…

Compared to the previous edition of Hartwell Genetics, this version is leaps and bounds of improvement. About 3 years ago I took a course using the old edition and felt like there was a rigid change in the material from Mendelian genetics to the molecular details of the field. Practical details about lab techniques often seemed like sidenotes rather than keys to the text. Also, chapters were disjoint as they jumped from historical perspective to modern techniques. In this new edition, I can see how much the readability of the text has improved! The organized layout of chapters has a clear ebb and flow to it. Starting with a short overview of the field in chapter 1, this textbook lets students know the scope of the field of genetics before delving into the text. From evolutionary biology to clinical applications, this book is chock-full of examples that detail the practical benefits of the field. Each chapter is laid out in a clear format with great illustrations and examples. The practice questions are challenging (not impossible) and endow the student with a perspective about the greater context of the field. Each chapter prepares you for the end-of-chapter questions, but puts the general tenants of the chapter in a variety of contexts, promoting learning. This edition does a much better job of integrating the history of Darwinian, Mendelian, molecular, and population genetics ideas (i.e. Sewall Wright) with practical techniques like pedigree analysis, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and cloning. Overall, I would say this text is a great introductory genetics text that has vastly improved from the previous edition.

About the Author

JEREMY M. BERG received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry from Stanford (where he did research with Keith Hodgson and Lubert Stryer) and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Harvard with Richard Holm. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Carl Pabo in Biophysics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Johns Hopkins from 1986 to 1990. He then moved to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as Professor and Director of the Department of Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry, where he remained until 2003. He then became Director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences at the National Institutes of Health. In 2011, he moved to the University of Pittsburgh where he is now Professor of Computational and Systems Biology and Pittsburgh Foundation Chair and Director of the Institute for Personalized Medicine. He served as President of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from 2011-2013. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He received the American Chemical Society Award in Pure Chemistry (1994) and the Eli Lilly Award for Fundamental Research in Biological Chemistry (1995), was named Maryland Outstanding Young Scientist of the Year (1995), received the Harrison Howe Award (1997), and received public service awards from the Biophysical Society, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the American Chemical Society, and the American Society for Cell Biology. He also received numerous teaching awards, including the W. Barry Wood Teaching Award (selected by medical students), the Graduate Student Teaching Award, and the Professor’s Teaching Award for the Preclinical Sciences. He is coauthor, with Stephen J. Lippard, of the textbook Principles of Bioinorganic Chemistry.

John L. Tymoczko is Towsley Professor of Biology at Carleton College, where he has taught since 1976. He currently teaches Biochemistry, the Metabolic Basis
of Human Disease, Oncogenes and the Molecular Biology of Cancer, and Exercise Biochemistry and co-teaches an introductory course, Energy Flow in Biological
Systems. Professor Tymoczko received his B.A. from the University in Chicago in 1970 and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Chicago with
Shutsung Liao at the Ben May Institute for Cancer Research in 1973. He then held a postdoctoral position with Hewson Swift of the Department of Biology at
the University of Chicago. The focus of his research has been on steroid receptors, ribonucleoprotein particles, and proteolytic processing enzymes. Gregory J. Gatto, Jr., received his A.B. degree in chemistry from Princeton University, where he worked with Martin F. Semmelhack and was awarded the Everett S. Wallis Prize in Organic Chemistry. In 2003, he received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he studied the structural biology of peroxisomal targeting signal recognition with Jeremy M. Berg and received the Michael A. Shanoff Young Investigator Research Award. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in 2006 with Christopher T. Walsh at Harvard Medical School, where he studied the biosynthesis of the macrolide immunosuppressants. Best written biology book I have read. My freshman biology course was in 1972 and a career in health sciences made my focus narrow to human biology. This is a great way to get caught up on general biology. It’s a beautiful, stimulating, and well-written book with timely reviews in each chapter to consolidate what students of Biology wish to know. Only reading a few chapter per week to make the book last. Why hurry through a gourmet meal? Wish we had books like this back then instead of walls of text. Happy that teaching sciences have progressed along with technological sciences. Congratulations to all the contributors.

As a community college anatomy instructor, I have examined all the major undergraduate anatomy texts (and have taught from 5 different texts). This text is the clearest of them all (but with Tortora a close second). Many, many students struggle with college anatomy (nationally there’s only about a 50% success rate); this book helps by being clear, direct, and its content very closely matches what most professors actually lecture on. Many other text are too long-winded, don’t get to the point or state in simple terms what they are trying to communicate to students. There are good tips for students about how to remember things. That said, the 4th edition had some minor changes that moved away from the clear, straight-forwardness of the earlier editions and the 4th edition came only 2 years after the 3rd and I have some concerns that the growing popularity of this text is sending the authors and publishers down the spiraling rabbit-hole of senseless new editions and destroying the books original strength (keeping it clear and simple) as it tries to woo more and more professors to adapt the text.
