Biography

Robert L. Norton earned undergraduate degrees in both mechanical engineering and industrial technology at Northeastern University and an MS in engineering design at Tufts University. He was also granted an honorary Doctorate of Engineering from WPI. He is a registered professional engineer in Massachusetts and Florida. He has extensive industrial experience in engineering design and manufacturing and many years’ experience teaching mechanical engineering, engineering design, computer science, and related subjects at Northeastern University, Tufts University, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

At Polaroid Corporation for 10 years, he designed cameras, related mechanisms, and high-speed automated machinery. He spent three years at Jet Spray Cooler Inc., designing food-handling machinery and products. For five years he helped develop artificial-heart and noninvasive assisted-circulation devices at the Tufts New England Medical Center and Boston City Hospital. Since leaving industry to join academia, he has continued as an independent consultant on engineering projects ranging from disposable medical products to high-speed production machinery. He holds 13 U.S. patents.

Norton has been on the faculty of Worcester Polytechnic Institute since 1981 and is now Milton Prince Higgins II Distinguished Professor Emeritus. He taught undergraduate and graduate courses in mechanical engineering with emphasis on design, kinematics, vibrations, and dynamics of machinery for 31 years there.

I just completed a graduate course in GIS and remote sensing, and we used this book as the basic guide to using GIS. Prior to this, I had always relied on other people to “make maps” for me. Now I am not only making my own maps, but also using GIS to perform many different types of analysis for my job. This book was key to that – the course I took didn’t really cover much GIS in the class materials – that was focused mostly on remote sensing and researching what others have done with GIS. I’ve sat through probably a half-dozen GIS “workshops” over the years and never really learned anything. Taking your time with this book, and no one standing over your shoulder and telling you which buttons to click, is really the best way to learn. I liked this book so much I ordered 10 more for my staff, and 9 of them have now completed it, too, and are working on their projects to earn the certificate from me that they have mastered basic ArcGIS use. I’ve now got a backlog of 15 other employees who want to be in on the next round of training! Very highly recommended!

About the Author

STEVEN A. BRANDT, PhD, Lt. Col. USAF (Ret.), is a professor of aeronautics, an engineer, and a pilot with over 3000 hours flying time in jet fighter and training aircraft and over 30 years experience as a platform instructor. He has taught the capstone aircraft design course at USAFA for 25 years and was a pioneer in the use of design/build/fly as an instructional method. He is currently leading aircraft design projects for a number of government agencies and private corporations.
