About the Author

James Giancaspro, PhD, PE, is an associate professor of civil engineering at the University of Miami. He received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering and master of science and doctoral degrees in structural engineering from Rutgers University. He has collaborated with scientists at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to investigate high-temperature-resistant materials used in aerospace applications. He also spent several years in the Structural Damage Technology division of Boeing, where he developed test methods for composite materials and experimental programs to evaluate their durability and damage tolerance. In 2013, he received the James M. Robbins Excellence in Teaching Award from Chi Epsilon for the southeastern United States.

I downloaded this book to study for the PE Structural 1. It is a thorough, item by item book that has excellent symbol references, clear definitions, worked examples etc. The author is interested on you, the reader, understanding seismic design, unlike many of the other books on the market that cater to someone impressing their literary peers. The UBC 97 was a landmark in Seismic design, and although I agree with the other reviews that it may seem “out of date”, I found it helpful to use this book to learn the fundamentals regading seismic, which are still the same in today’s codes. Excellent chapters on vibration and diagphragm analysis. All I can say is that it helped me tremendously in the PE, which is the reason I downloaded it.

I cannot express my regret at not having this with me at the seismic portion of the California Civil PE exam. This is one of Lindeburg’s best, and is a great reference for the exam and in daily use in seismic design. Well worth every penny. My only hope for this is that he updates it once California (finally) adopts the IBC building code.

I have taken TOEFL Test and scored 115/120… Certainly, this book was important during my preparation. Actually, I first bought the Barron’s Superpack, and it was really useful because it has 8 model tests, and I really like to overprepare… When there were only a few weeks before the test, I bought this book from the test-makers, and I believe it was a great deal… Even though it only contains 3 model tests (quite a few in my opinion, but ETS is working on it, releasing now volumes with actual tests), they are authentic ones and -as expected- provides students with a real sense of the test difficulty and what the test taker is expected to do in each type of question during the test. It explains all answers comprehensively, highlighting not only why one option is correct, but why the others are wrong. There are also plenty of examples of writing questions with actual students’ texts and their scores; the same is true for speaking questions. Finally, the CD-ROM is, in my opinion, really good and I have not experienced any problems with it. However, its design on the screen and the way the students need to go from one question to another is a little bit different from the actual test.
