Biography

After some early work as an air conditioning and refrigeration mechanic, Mr. Doty graduated from the University of Central Florida and began a long career as a Professional Engineer, a path that ultimately led to writing, speaking, and now teaching.

Mr. Doty holds PE licenses in five states as well as a variety of certifications, but his true value in the marketplace comes from experience with commercial buildings: mechanical system design, automatic controls, commissioning and energy management. “After 25 years of it, I know what makes them tick.”

Energy management is becoming more important as utility costs increase, and Doty’s timing is good. The ability to balance technical with practical is popular with many, and a trademark of his writing and presentations.

So, I started reading this book on a Tuesday. I didn’t finish it until a Saturday like 5 months later. The material is a bit dry but if you want to know the thermal conductivity or specific heat of a banana, maybe cake batter or chickens, this is the book for you. After reading this book you will know precisely how long to cook your banana split for, or maybe how long to freeze your chicken.
This is a very effective textbook. I think this is one of the most used textbooks in heat transfer courses, and there is a reason for that. Everything you need to know, both conceptually and mathematically, is laid out very cleanly and in logical order. It is easy to follow for someone with little to no background.

Norm Lieberman is one of the best engineers I have ever read. He is able to bring concepts to life that one would not understand without years of experience and suffering the agonies of having gone through many start-ups. The book is very factual and more cased based but is not like his absolutely must read book on the “Process Design for Reliable Operations” but it does supplement that volume.

Norm Lieberman has done it again. I’ve bought two other titles from him over the past year (Working Guide to Process Equipment &Troubleshooting Process Plant Control) and neither have disappointed. As a graduate process engineer these books helped me breach the gap between the theoretical concepts at university and the practical realities that greet you once you start work.

This is a practical guide for both new and experienced troubleshooters alike. Lieberman removes most of the fat associated with troubleshooting publications and endeavours to assist the reader to reach the crux of most refining problems with a pinch of chemical engineering humour to boot.
