Warrior of the Light: A Manual by Paulo Coelho pdf free download

Description:

Paulo Coelho inspired millions of readers around the world and became one of the most beloved storytellers of our time with the international bestselling phenomenon The Alchemist. Now, in the beloved companion to his classic,The Warrior of The Light: A Manual invites us to live out our dreams to embrace the uncertainty of life, and to rise to our own unique destiny. In his inimitable style, Paulo Coelho shows readers how to embark upon the way of the Warrior: the one who appreciates the miracle of being alive, the one who accepts failure, and the one whose quest leads him to become the person he wants to be.

From Publishers Weekly

This companion volume to Coelho’s popular The Alchemist is an odd hybrid-a self-help manual with fictional overtones; a series of aphorisms and platitudes set within the frame of the sketchiest of parables. In the parable, a boy meets a beautiful woman at a beach, who proceeds to tell him about a hidden undersea temple near a vanished island. The boy fails in his initial attempt to find the temple, though he hears its bells ring, but later, as a grown man, he again meets the woman, who hands him an empty notebook and directs him to write about the “Warrior of the Light,” a being who is “capable of understanding the miracle of life, of fighting to the last for something he believes in-and of hearing the bells that the waves set ringing on the seabed.” Some of the aphorisms that follow have a specific spiritual source-Lao Tzu, Gandhi, Jesus and Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, among others, are quoted. Coelho provides general spiritual inspiration, but he also offers guidance in more mundane matters, explaining the specific motivations behind childish, immature behavior, cowardly moments, feelings of spiritual emptiness and the reluctance to change. Some of these passages are original, but others merely repackage common inspirational fodder. The volume preserves the basic spiritual tone of The Alchemist, but readers expecting comparable depth and substance will be disappointed.

The Writers Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers by Christopher Vogler pdf free download

The Writers Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers by Christopher Vogler pdf free download

Description:

The udated and revised third edition provides new insights and observations from Vogler’s ongoing work on mythology’s influence on stories, movies, and man himself. The previous two editons of this book have sold over 180,000 units, making this book a ‘classic’ for screenwriters, writers, and novelists.

As a fan of Joseph Campbell and amateur writer, this book really appeals to me. It is more than just a how-to for aspiring novelists, it is a how-to for life. It is geared toward the writing of novels and stories with human drama and interaction, which makes it a bit more specialized. If you want a more general but very good reference for writing in general, then I recommend Simon & Schuster Handbook for Writers (MyCompLab Series) — it is worth it’s weight in gold.

Back to the book at hand. Christopher Vogler’s 3rd edition TWJ is actually a very compelling read rather than a dry textbook sort of how-to. It is a very clear and readable application of J. Campbell’s theories about the mythic structure in film and book. The inclusion of the 6 Star Wars movies and their epic story arc makes for very interesting reading too. Delving into this book reveals ways to better create strong characters with depth and substance that will help set any story apart. Its study of mythology gives it a strong classical foundation from which a writer can draw upon in the creation of their own epic sagas.

The author has worked on such films as The Thin Red Line, Fight Club, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast so have no doubt that he knows his stuff, and presents in well in this 365 page gem. Vogler shows you how to go beyond the normal everyday writing (emails, letters, articles, etc.) to tackle the daunting task of structuring a novel that is thousands of words in size.

Common Sense by Thomas Paine pdf free download

Common Sense by Thomas Paine pdf free download

Description:

Among the most influential authors and reformers of his age, Thomas Paine (1737–1809) was born in England but went on to play an important role in both the American and French Revolutions. In 1774, he emigrated to America where, for a time, he helped to edit the Pennsylvania Magazine. On January 10, 1776, he published his pamphletCommon Sense, a persuasive argument for the colonies’ political and economic separation from Britain.
Common Sense cites the evils of monarchy, accuses the British government of inflicting economic and social injustices upon the colonies, and points to the absurdity of an island attempting to rule a continent. Credited by George Washington as having changed the minds of many of his countrymen, the document sold over 500,000 copies within a few months.
Today, Common Sense remains a landmark document in the struggle for freedom, distinguished not only by Paine’s ideas but also by its clear and passionate presentation. Designed to ignite public opinion against autocratic rule, the pamphlet offered a careful balance between imagination and judgment, and appropriate language and expression to fit the subject. It immediately found a receptive audience, heartened Washington’s despondent army, and foreshadowed much of the phrasing and substance of the Declaration of Independence.
A selection of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.

From Library Journal

Paine is one of those who proved the pen is mightier than the sword. Included here are several of the writings that forged the spirit of our nation, including Common Sense, The Crisis, The Rights of Man, The Age of Reason, and Other Pamphlets, Articles, and Letters. Note that two new Paine biographies have been recently published (LJ 11/15/94 and LJ 1/95).

The Fires of Jubilee: Nat Turner’s Fierce Rebellion by Stephen B. Oates pdf free download

The Fires of Jubilee: Nat Turner's Fierce Rebellion by Stephen B. Oates pdf free download

Description:

The bloody slave rebellion led by Nat Turner in Virginia in 1831 and the savage reprisals that followed shattered beyond repair the myth of the contented slave and the benign master, and intensified the forces of change that would plunge America into the bloodbath of the Civil War.

Stephen B. Oates, the acclaimed biographer of Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr., presents a gripping and insightful account of the rebellion—the complex, gifted, and driven man who led it, the social conditions that produced it, and the legacy it left. A classic now newly reissued for the first time in more than twenty years, here is the dramatic re-creation of the turbulent period that marked a crucial turning point in America’s history.

Review

“A vivid and excellent narrative account.” (New York Times)

“Oates writes in a vivid… fashion constructing a meaningful historical context.” (Library Journal)

“A vivid and convincing re-creation of the rebellion’s black and white violence, breathing life into chilling scenes of mayhem, against a background of slave reality and slave-holding mentality.” (Publishers Weekly)

“A much needed correction to historical fantasies. … Grounded in the facts and excellently documented, this volume is essential for students of slavery and of the history of violence in America.” (FAWN BRODIE, author of Thomas Jefferson: An Intimate History”)

About the Author

GENKI I: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese by Eri Banno, Yoko Ikeda, Yutaka Ohno pdf free download

GENKI I: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese by Eri Banno, Yoko Ikeda, Yutaka Ohno pdf free download

Description:

Second edition of the most highly regarded teaching text book on the Japanese language, covering speaking, listening, reading, and writing to cultivate overall language ability. Each lesson in the revised edition features a new section dubbed Culture Notes,” and now includes the audio CD companion which is in mp3 format ready to install on any music player. In Japanese/English. Distributed by Tsai Fong Books, Inc.

I’ve only just started using this book for the second half of my first year college Japanese. Even so, I have to rave about it!
The textbook and the separate workbook, both have their own MP3 cd’s for listening/speaking comprehension. The lessons are straightforward and to the point, but if you get the workbook that goes along with this, you will soon find that the lessons really force you to USE the language. The cd’s are awesome for getting used to hearing the language as well.

After using a different textbook for the first half of my Japanese course at a different college, I am half wishing I could go back and do the same course over but with this book instead. It gives you quick and to the point grammar explanations and then follows that up with practice sections to really help drill the content into you. The workbook that can be purchased with this, only helps strengthen that knowledge even further. Don’t let the size of the workbook fool you either. It might be few in pages compared to some other workbooks, but its a definite treasure trove of useful study lessons! Probably the best study aid I have used for learning Japanese thus far.

Give Me Liberty!: An American History by Eric Foner pdf free download

Give Me Liberty!: An American History by Eric Foner pdf free download

Description:

Clear, concise, integrated, and up-to-date, Give Me Liberty! is a proven success with teachers and students. Eric Foner pulls the pieces of the past together into a cohesive picture, using the theme of freedom throughout. The Fourth Edition features stronger coverage of American religion and a reinforced pedagogical program aimed at fostering effective reading and study skills. The Seagull Edition includes the full text of the regular edition in a compact volume, for an affordable price.

I am taking two courses of American history at my community college. This book is the one that my history professor chose for the class. It is a solid treatment of the history of the United States focused around the advancement of liberty. It does not take steps to ensure a level of detail in the major wars like the Civil War or Revolution. Instead, it directs the student’s attention towards events which set the stage for oppression, racism, sexism, and other discriminations. From the removal of the natives to the growing issue of slavery in the United States, Foner carefully outlines how the meaning of the word ‘liberty’ means different things to different cultures, and how it has changed over time. The unique qualities of American liberty are thoroughly treated. This makes the textbook flow with ease; students can easily see a growing pattern emerge in Foner’s work. True to his background, Foner gives an extremely lucid presentation that set the stage for the Civil War, and the route to segregation afterwards.

Although I had a previous edition (the one with the better front cover art) I can honestly say that this is the best history book I’ve ever had to read. I actually read the text cover to cover and loved it. It does not flow like a text book, but rather like a novel. It was very enjoyable and the ease of it helped me get an A.

Easy French Step-by-Step by Myrna Bell Rochester pdf free download

Easy French Step-by-Step by Myrna Bell Rochester pdf free download

Description:

Get up and running with French

Easy French Step-by-Step proves that a solid grounding in grammar basics is the key to mastering a second language. You are quickly introduced to grammatical rules and concepts in order of importance, which you can build on as you progress through the book. You will also learn more than 300 verbs, chosen by their frequency of use. Numerous exercises and engaging readings help you quickly build your speaking and comprehension prowess.

Hello. I have had this book for a few months now. I would like to say that it has been a big help. First of all, I’m a junior in high school who’s taking French and desperately needed a study guide. Well this was it. What I love about this is all the exercises that it comes with. Every chapter has around 12 sections of exercises where you get to practice what you have acquired the few pages before. Thanks to this book (and summer tutoring), I have learned enough French that I was able to skip second year of French at my school.

Some important notes:
If you don’t know anything about the French language, you’ll find this book a hard one (Even though it’s a Step-by-Step self study guide). For one thing, there is not a book in the world that can ever teach you the pronunciation needed. As for me, I had my French teacher give me a whole summer of French tutoring for free. That really helped with correct enunciation. I would recommend to the absolute beginner (especially those who are monolingual) to get in contact with mentor to help explain the difficult part of prounounciation. As you may or may not know, 80% of French words have mute endings that might or might not get pronounced depending on the next syllable. You really want someone to guide you if you’re a beginner. Also, before you dive into this book, understand these few concepts:

(First List)
– Verbal Aspects
– Verbal Tenses
– Verbal Moods (especially the subjunctive)
– Direct Objects
– Indirect Objects
– Antecedent
– Relative clauses
– Verb Valency

I recommend it highly to everyone, both beginners and those wanting to perfect his or her skills.

One of the challenges a fiction writer faces, especially when prolific, is coming up with fresh ways to describe emotions. This handy compendium fills that need. The Four Loves by C.S. Lewis pdf free download

The Four Loves by C.S. Lewis pdf free download

Description:

“We need others physically, emotionally, intellectually; we need them if we are to know anything, even ourselves.”

We hear often that love is patient and kind, not envious or prideful. We hear that human love is a reflection of divine love. We hear that God is love. But how do we understand its work in our lives, its perils and rewards? Here, the incomparable C. S. Lewis examines human love in four forms: affection, the most basic, general, and emotive; friendship, the most rare, least jealous, and, in being freely chosen, perhaps the most profound; Eros, passionate love that can run counter to happiness and poses real danger; charity, the greatest, most spiritual, and least selfish. Proper love is a risk, but to bar oneself from it–to deny love–is a damning choice. Love is a need and a gift; love brings joy and laughter. We must seek to be awakened and so to find an Appreciative love through which “all things are possible.”

The Four Loves deserves to become a minor classic as a modern mirror of our souls, a mirror of the virtues and failings of human loving.” —New York Times Book Review

“Lewis has a keen eye, a large measure of human sympathy, wit, and a command of simple words.” —Times Literary Supplement

C. S. (Clive Staples) Lewis (1898-1963), one of the great writers of the twentieth century, also continues to be one of our most influential Christian thinkers. He wrote more than thirty books, both popular and scholarly, including The Chronicles of Narnia series, The Screwtape Letters, The Four Loves, Mere Christianity, andSurprised by Joy.

1776 by David McCullough pdf free download

1776 by David McCullough pdf free download

Description:

America’s beloved and distinguished historian presents, in a book of breathtaking excitement, drama, and narrative force, the stirring story of the year of our nation’s birth, 1776, interweaving, on both sides of the Atlantic, the actions and decisions that led Great Britain to undertake a war against her rebellious colonial subjects and that placed America’s survival in the hands of George Washington.

In this masterful book, David McCullough tells the intensely human story of those who marched with General George Washington in the year of the Declaration of Independence—when the whole American cause was riding on their success, without which all hope for independence would have been dashed and the noble ideals of the Declaration would have amounted to little more than words on paper.

Based on extensive research in both American and British archives, 1776 is a powerful drama written with extraordinary narrative vitality. It is the story of Americans in the ranks, men of every shape, size, and color, farmers, schoolteachers, shoemakers, no-accounts, and mere boys turned soldiers. And it is the story of the King’s men, the British commander, William Howe, and his highly disciplined redcoats who looked on their rebel foes with contempt and fought with a valor too little known.

Written as a companion work to his celebrated biography of John Adams, David McCullough’s 1776 is another landmark in the literature of American history.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best of the Month: With apologies to local museums, it’s hard to imagine an interactive look at the birth of American independence that exceeds 1776: The Illustrated Edition. Packed with striking replicas of letters, maps, and portraits, this updated version of David McCullough’s 2005 bestseller provides readers with unedited first-hand accounts of America’s initial steps toward sovereignty. Its engaging narrative blends beautifully with personal notes from iconic leaders and reveals the determination, bravery, and good ol’ blind luck that founded our country. –Dave Callanan –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
