The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living by Ryan Holiday, Stephen Hanselman pdf free download.

From the team that brought you The Obstacle is The Way and Ego is The Enemy, a beautiful daily devotional of Stoic meditations.

Why have history’s greatest minds—from George Washington to Frederick the Great to Ralph Waldo Emerson, along with today’s top performers from Super Bowl-winning football coaches to CEOs and celebrities—embraced the wisdom of the ancient Stoics? Because they realize that the most valuable wisdom is timeless and that philosophy is for living a better life, not a classroom exercise.

The Daily Stoic offers a daily devotional of Stoic insights and exercises, featuring all-new translations from the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the playwright Seneca, or slave-turned-philosopher Epictetus, as well as lesser-known luminaries like Zeno, Cleanthes, and Musonius Rufus. Every day of the year you’ll find one of their pithy, powerful quotations, as well as historical anecdotes, provocative commentary, and a helpful glossary of Greek terms. By following these teachings over the course of a year (and, indeed, for years to come) you’ll find the serenity, self-knowledge, and resilience you need to live well.

Review

“Whether you’re a lowly cubicle slave or a US Senator, this book will help you find your still center.”

Description:

Creating Mixed Model Value Streams: Practical Lean Techniques for Building to Demand by Kevin J. Duggan free download.

Following in the footsteps of its bestselling predecessor, Kevin J. Duggan, an executive mentor and recognized authority on Lean and Operational Excellence, draws on more than 10 years of experience and learning to provideCreating Mixed Model Value Streams, Second Edition. This second edition takes a step-by-step approach to implementing Lean in complex environments and describes which Lean techniques to use when faced with difficult situations―including high product mix, scheduling problems, shared resources, and unstable customer demand. In addition to a new section on handling shared resources to support mixed model production, the second edition:

  • Contains updates to sections on mixed model value streams
  • Introduces new information on constructing product family matrices
  • Expands on the concept of takt in mixed models
  • Provides additional insights on existing mixed model concepts, such as determining product family, taktcapability, and heijunka (load level scheduling)
  • Presents new concepts on sequencing work, such as offset scheduling and sequenced first-in, first-out (FIFO) lanes

Illustrated with a case study based on actual experience as well as a CD with helpful tools, the book walks readers through the reasoning the author has used with great success in practice. It delves beyond the basics of value stream mapping to explain how to create future states in a manufacturing environment characterized by multiple products, varying cycle times, and changing demand. Demonstrating advanced techniques for creating flow through shared resources, it also considers the concept of a guaranteed turnaround time for the shared resource.

The Accompanying CD Includes:

  • Spreadsheet and tutorial for sorting products into families
  • Spreadsheets for calculating equipment required and for determining the interval for Every Part Every Interval (EPEI)
  • Samples of visual method sheets for standard work
  • Case study value stream maps and mapping icons

Project Engineering: The Essential Toolbox for Young Engineers by Frederick Plummer pdf free download

Project Engineering: The Essential Toolbox for Young Engineers by Frederick Plummer pdf free download

Description:

Project Engineering: The Essential Toolbox for Young Engineers.

For newly hired young engineers assigned to their first real ‘project’, there has been little to offer in the way of advice on ‘where to begin’, ‘what to look out for and avoid’, and ‘how to get the job done right’. This book gives this advice from an author with long experience as senior engineer in government and industry (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Exxon-Mobil).
Beginning with guidance on understanding the typical organizational structure of any type of technical firm or company, author Plummer incorporates numerous hands-on examples and provides help on getting started with a project team, understanding key roles, and avoiding common pitfalls. In addition, he offers unique help on first-time experiences of working in other countries with engineering cultures that can be considerably different from the US.

•Reviews essentials of management for any new engineer suddenly thrust into responsibility
•Emphasizes skills that can get you promoted―and pitfalls that can get you fired
•Expanded case study to show typical evolution of a new engineer handed responsibility for a major design project

Review

“Project Engineering is an excellent reference work on the basis of launching an engineering career amd staying on the right course.”

“Project Engineering was written with two goals in mind: helping the freshly minted engineer survive his or her first foray into the workforce and aiding the established working engineer as he or she seeks to advance to a leadership oisition.”

“Beginning with a description of the scope of a project engineer’s typical areas of responsilbiliy, Plummer noted that they run the gamut from core planning to safety, risk management, cost control, and scheduling.”

Civil Engineering, Ray Bert

Statistical Quality Control by Douglas C. Montgomery pdf free download

Statistical Quality Control by Douglas C. Montgomery pdf free download

Description:

* This new edtion provides comprehensive treatment of the major aspects of using statistical methodology for quality control and improvement.

Douglas C. Montgomery is the man! Wonderful history on some of the top contributors in the world of quality. Excellent application examples. Solid math.

I am getting an undergrad in stats and have found that most of the stats courses offered through the math department at my university are geared either towards mathematicians (heavy on the proofs) or engineers/scientists with very little emphasis given to applying stats to business problems. On the other hand the applied stats courses offered through the business school are not nearly adequate in developing the underlying theory of either probability or statistical inference. This is an excellent book that bridges the space between business applications and mathematical statistics. I would highly recommend it to someone coming from either end of the spectrum (math vs. business).
I have stopped to count the number of quality books I bought until I found this one. For my point of view it is an almost perfect compendium with very interesting applied exercises: A must have! The only missing point is detailed mathematical proof of all the tools presented in the books (mathematical proof are always difficult to found in statistical quality control and this is a shame for a “quality” spirit) at least in the appendix or avalaible as free PDF on a website.
Very detailed explanations for control charts. This book is a good technical resource for all kinds of industrial processes. Statistical analysis reference.

Well written and although some of the concepts are older, they are still applicable in today’s manufacturing environment.

Excellent reference material, relevant on many levels.
