Description:

My lobotomy: a memoir by Dully, Howard; Fleming, Charles; Dully, Howard free download.

In this heartfelt memoir from one of the youngest recipients of the transorbital lobotamy, Howard Dully shares the story of a painfully dysfunctional childhood, a misspent youth, his struggle to claim the life that was taken from him, and his redemption.

At twelve, Howard Dully was guilty of the same crimes as other boys his age: he was moody and messy, rambunctious with his brothers, contrary just to prove a point, and perpetually at odds with his parents. Yet somehow, this normal boy became one of the youngest people on whom Dr. Walter Freeman performed his barbaric transorbital—or ice pick—lobotomy.

Abandoned by his family within a year of the surgery, Howard spent his teen years in mental institutions, his twenties in jail, and his thirties in a bottle. It wasn’t until he was in his forties that Howard began to pull his life together. But even as he began to live the “normal” life he had been denied, Howard struggled with one question: Why?

There were only three people who would know the truth: Freeman, the man who performed the procedure; Lou, his cold and demanding stepmother who brought Howard to the doctor’s attention; and his father, Rodney. Of the three, only Rodney, the man who hadn’t intervened on his son’s behalf, was still living. Time was running out. Stable and happy for the first time in decades, Howard began to search for answers.

Through his research, Howard met other lobotomy patients and their families, talked with one of Freeman’s sons about his father’s controversial life’s work, and confronted Rodney about his complicity. And, in the archive where the doctor’s files are stored, he finally came face to face with the truth.

Revealing what happened to a child no one—not his father, not the medical community, not the state—was willing to protect, My Lobotomy exposes a shameful chapter in the history of the treatment of mental illness. Yet, ultimately, this is a powerful and moving chronicle of the life of one man.

Description:

Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst by Robert M. Sapolsky free download.

A New York Times Bestseller.

“It’s no exaggeration to say that Behave is one of the best nonfiction books I’ve ever read.” — David P. Barash, The Wall Street Journal

“A quirky, opinionated and magisterial synthesis of psychology and neurobiology…Darwin would have been thrilled.” – Richard Wrangham, The New York Times Book Review

From the celebrated neurobiologist and primatologist, a landmark, genre-defining examination of human behavior, both good and bad, and an answer to the question: Why do we do the things we do?

Sapolsky’s storytelling concept is delightful but it also has a powerful intrinsic logic: he starts by looking at the factors that bear on a person’s reaction in the precise moment a behavior occurs, and then hops back in time from there, in stages, ultimately ending up at the deep history of our species and its evolutionary legacy.

And so the first category of explanation is the neurobiological one. A behavior occurs–whether an example of humans at our best, worst, or somewhere in between. What went on in a person’s brain a second before the behavior happened? Then Sapolsky pulls out to a slightly larger field of vision, a little earlier in time: What sight, sound, or smell caused the nervous system to produce that behavior? And then, what hormones acted hours to days earlier to change how responsive that individual is to the stimuli that triggered the nervous system? By now he has increased our field of vision so that we are thinking about neurobiology and the sensory world of our environment and endocrinology in trying to explain what happened.

Sapolsky keeps going: How was that behavior influenced by structural changes in the nervous system over the preceding months, by that person’s adolescence, childhood, fetal life, and then back to his or her genetic makeup? Finally, he expands the view to encompass factors larger than one individual. How did culture shape that individual’s group, what ecological factors millennia old formed that culture? And on and on, back to evolutionary factors millions of years old.

The result is one of the most dazzling tours d’horizon of the science of human behavior ever attempted, a majestic synthesis that harvests cutting-edge research across a range of disciplines to provide a subtle and nuanced perspective on why we ultimately do the things we do…for good and for ill. Sapolsky builds on this understanding to wrestle with some of our deepest and thorniest questions relating to tribalism and xenophobia, hierarchy and competition, morality and free will, and war and peace. Wise, humane, often very funny, Behave is a towering achievement, powerfully humanizing, and downright heroic in its own right.

Description:

The Obesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss by Jason Fung free download.

Everything you believe about how to lose weight is wrong. Weight gain and obesity are driven by hormones – in everyone – and only by understanding the effects of insulin and insulin resistance can we achieve lasting weight loss.

In this highly listenable and provocative book, Dr. Jason Fung sets out an original, robust theory of obesity that provides startling insights into proper nutrition. In addition to his five basic steps – a set of lifelong habits that will improve your health and control your insulin levels – Dr. Fung explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight – for good.

Really well written explanation of the biological processes that cause weight gain and obesity. I highly recommend this to ANYONE who wants to understand why “diets” don’t usually work, and what is causing the obesity epidemic. We are finally understanding this stuff, and can stop listening to the government who thinks it knows what’s best for us without scientific backup!

Excellent explanation of the true causes of obesity. Very clear about the science of weight gain and weight loss. Simple and clear instructions on how to permanently lose weight.

I really appreciate Dr Fung for putting all of this information in one place. I’ve been struggling with insulin resistance throughout my life. I LOVE everything about food but have put intermittent fasting back in my lifestyle. I have 45 lbs and about 25% bf to lose. I’m 57 years young and a power lifter 3x’s/week. Fasting has actually helped my training progress; not hurt it!! Thanks for the science and motivation Dr Fung!!!

Description:

Introduction to Continuum Mechanics by W Michael Lai; David Rubin; Erhard Krempl pdf free download.

Continuum Mechanics is a branch of physical mechanics that describes the macroscopic mechanical behavior of solid or fluid materials considered to be continuously distributed. It is fundamental to the fields of civil, mechanical, chemical and bioengineering. This time-tested text has been used for over 35 years to introduce junior and senior-level undergraduate engineering students, as well as graduate students, to the basic principles of continuum mechanics and their applications to real engineering problems. The text begins with a detailed presentation of the coordinate invariant quantity, the tensor, introduced as a linear transformation. This is then followed by the formulation of the kinematics of deformation, large as well as very small, the description of stresses and the basic laws of continuum mechanics. As applications of these laws, the behaviors of certain material idealizations (models) including the elastic, viscous and viscoelastic materials, are presented.

This new edition offers expanded coverage of the subject matter both in terms of details and contents, providing greater flexibility for either a one or two-semester course in either continuum mechanics or elasticity. Although this current edition has expanded the coverage of the subject matter, it nevertheless uses the same approach as that in the earlier editions – that one can cover advanced topics in an elementary way that go from simple to complex, using a wealth of illustrative examples and problems. It is, and will remain, one of the most accessible textbooks on this challenging engineering subject.

  • Significantly expanded coverage of elasticity in Chapter 5, including solutions of some 3-D problems based on the fundamental potential functions approach.
  • New section at the end of Chapter 4 devoted to the integral formulation of the field equations
  • Seven new appendices appear at the end of the relevant chapters to help make each chapter more self-contained
  • Expanded and improved problem sets providing both intellectual challenges and engineering applications

Erasing Death: The Science That Is Rewriting the Boundaries Between Life and Death by Sam Parnia, Josh Young free download

Erasing Death: The Science That Is Rewriting the Boundaries Between Life and Death by Sam Parnia, Josh Young free download

Description:

Erasing Death: The Science That Is Rewriting the Boundaries Between Life and Death reveals that death is not a moment in time. Death, rather, is a process—a process that can be interrupted well after it has begun. Innovative techniques have proven to be effective in revitalizing both the body and mind, but they are only employed in approximately half of the hospitals throughout the United States and Europe.

Dr. Sam Parnia, Director of the AWARE Study (AWAreness during REsuscitation) and one of the world’s leading experts on the scientific study of death and near-death experiences (NDE), presents cutting-edge research from the front lines of critical care and resuscitation medicine while also shedding light on the ultimate mystery: What happens to human consciousness during and after death? Dr. Parnia reveals how some form of “afterlife” may be uniquely ours, as evidenced by the continuation of the human mind and psyche after the brain stops functioning.

With physicians such as Dr. Parnia at the forefront, we are on the verge of discovering a new universal science of consciousness that reveals the nature of mind and a future where death is not the final defeat, but is, in fact, reversible.

Review

“A fascinating discussion that addresses medical, moral and social issues and their implications for understanding consciousness, self-awareness and the soul.” (—Kirkus)

“Parnia convincingly argues that death is a dynamic biological process that only begins once the heart stops beating. Modern medicine and technology have now made it feasible for consciousness to persist in the dying brain—and come back to life.” (—Stephan A. Mayer, M.D., professor of neurology and neurological surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons)

Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School by John Medina pdf free download

Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School by John Medina pdf free download

Description:

Most of us have no idea what’s really going on inside our heads. Yet brain scientists have uncovered details every business leader, parent, and teacher should know—like the need for physical activity to get your brain working its best.

How do we learn? What exactly do sleep and stress do to our brains? Why is multi-tasking a myth? Why is it so easy to forget—and so important to repeat new knowledge? Is it true that men and women have different brains?

In Brain Rules, Dr. John Medina, a molecular biologist, shares his lifelong interest in how the brain sciences might influence the way we teach our children and the way we work. In each chapter, he describes a brain rule—what scientists know for sure about how our brains work—and then offers transformative ideas for our daily lives.

Medina’s fascinating stories and infectious sense of humor breathe life into brain science. You’ll learn why Michael Jordan was no good at baseball. You’ll peer over a surgeon’s shoulder as he proves that most of us have a Jennifer Aniston neuron. You’ll meet a boy who has an amazing memory for music but can’t tie his own shoes.

You will discover how:

Every brain is wired differently
Exercise improves cognition
We are designed to never stop learning and exploring
Memories are volatile
Sleep is powerfully linked with the ability to learn
Vision trumps all of the other senses
Stress changes the way we learn
In the end, you’ll understand how your brain really works—and how to get the most out of it.

Review

“Dissects the workings of the brain in plain English, explaining its role in the workplace and classroom…a writing style that makes words leap off the page.”

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR): basic principles, protocols, and procedures by Francine Shapiro pdf free download

Description:

This volume provides the definitive guide to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), the psychotherapeutic approach developed by Francine Shapiro. EMDR is one of the most widely investigated treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder, and many other applications are also being explored. Presenting background on EMDR’s development, theoretical constructs, and possible underlying mechanisms, the volume also contains detailed descriptions and transcripts that guide the clinician through every stage of therapeutic treatment, from client selection to the administration of EMDR and its integration within a comprehensive treatment plan. Among the many clinical populations for whom the material in this volume has been seen as applicable are survivors of sexual abuse, crime, and combat, as well as sufferers of phobias and other experientially based disorders. Special feature: Two online-only appendices were added in 2009 (www.guilford.com/EMDR-appendices). These appendices comprehensively review current research on EMDR and its clinical applications.

EMDR is now recognized by the American Psychiatric Association as an effective treatment for ameliorating symptoms of both acute and chronic PTSD (APA Practice Guidelines for the Treatment of Patients with Acute Stress Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder).

New to This Edition:
*Updated neurobiological data, findings from controlled clinical studies, and literature on emerging clinical applications.
*Updated protocols and procedures for working with adults and children with a range of presenting problems.

Review

“EMDR, arising out of a cognitive-behavioral orientation, has increasingly become a rather strikingly integrative approach. Its potential fascination for psychodynamically oriented therapists is considerable. In my own experience, it has seemed to generate ‘deep’ material rapidly and to provide access to a wider range of associations and of sensory/affective connections. I am personally eager to conduct research further investigating these impressions, and hope other psychodynamically oriented clinician-researchers will join in this investigative effort.”–Paul Wachtel, PhD, City College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York

Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us by Robert D. Hare pdf free download

Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us by Robert D. Hare pdf free download

Description:

Most people are both repelled and intrigued by the images of cold-blooded, conscienceless murderers that increasingly populate our movies, television programs, and newspaper headlines. With their flagrant criminal violation of society’s rules, serial killers like Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy are among the most dramatic examples of the psychopath. Individuals with this personality disorder are fully aware of the consequences of their actions and know the difference between right and wrong, yet they are terrifyingly self-centered, remorseless, and unable to care about the feelings of others. Perhaps most frightening, they often seem completely normal to unsuspecting targets–and they do not always ply their trade by killing. Presenting a compelling portrait of these dangerous men and women based on 25 years of distinguished scientific research, Dr. Robert D. Hare vividly describes a world of con artists, hustlers, rapists, and other predators who charm, lie, and manipulate their way through life. Are psychopaths mad, or simply bad? How can they be recognized? And how can we protect ourselves? This book provides solid information and surprising insights for anyone seeking to understand this devastating condition.

Review

“A brilliant, in-depth handling of a most complex subject.” –Hugh Aynesworth, author of Ted Bundy: Conversations with a Killer

“Fascinating, chilling, and accurate….The world’s most renowned psychopathy researcher has leavened sharp scientific insights with page-turning case descriptions in a rare publishing feat: a book that is both highly readable and highly reputable.” –John Monahan, PhD

“A fascinating, if terrifying, look at psychopaths….Hare makes a strong case for the view that psychopaths are born, not made….A chilling, eye-opening reportand a call to action.”
