Structural engineers Levy and Salvadori have written a well-paced, highly informative, nontechnical work describing failures in a variety of structures such as buildings, bridges, and dams. Salvadori wrote Why Buildings Stand Up (Norton, 1990), so this is a natural complement. The subject, somewhat grisly in nature, is presented here with respect for the tragedies involved, and yet with a lighthearted pursuit of the truth as to the cause of the failure. Analysis of the failure is discussed and recommendations for improvement are offered, but without the usual condescension hindsight allows. Profuse illustrations by Kevin Woest, well labeled and explained, and several appendixes aid access. An index (not seen) is provided, but no glossary. This fascinating book is easily accessible to laypersons. Highly recommended.

Biography

STEVE DOTY, PE, CEM, LEED AP

After some early work as an air conditioning and refrigeration mechanic, Mr. Doty graduated from the University of Central Florida and began a long career as a Professional Engineer, a path that ultimately led to writing, speaking, and now teaching.

Mr. Doty holds PE licenses in five states as well as a variety of certifications, but his true value in the marketplace comes from experience with commercial buildings: mechanical system design, automatic controls, commissioning and energy management. “After 25 years of it, I know what makes them tick.”

Energy management is becoming more important as utility costs increase, and Doty’s timing is good. The ability to balance technical with practical is popular with many, and a trademark of his writing and presentations.

Pierre R. About the Author

He holds a B.S.C.E, M.S., and Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. After obtaining his B.S.C.E., he served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force from 1960-1963. In 1963, he joined Wilbur Smith Associates, where he was a highway bridge designer. In 1964, he enrolled in graduate school and was the recipient of an NSF Graduate Traineeship. Since joining the Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Memphis, he has received two NASA/ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowships at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. He has worked several summers for various consulting firms and for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was a recipient of the University of Memphis Distinguished Teaching Award in 2000. Professor Segui is a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction and is a member of the Committee on Manuals. He received the 2011 AISC Special Achievement Award for his contributions to steel design education. He is a Life Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a member of the Tennessee Structural Engineers Association. He is a licensed professional engineer in Tennessee.
