Introduction to Digital Filters: with Audio Applications by Julius O. Smith III pdf free download

Introduction to Digital Filters: with Audio Applications by Julius O. Smith III pdf free download

Description:

A digital filter can be pictured as a “black box” that accepts a sequence of numbers and emits a new sequence of numbers. In digital audio signal processing applications, such number sequences usually represent sounds. For example, digital filters are used to implement graphic equalizers and other digital audio effects. This book is a gentle introduction to digital filters, including mathematical theory, illustrative examples, some audio applications, and useful software starting points. The theory treatment begins at the high-school level, and covers fundamental concepts in linear systems theory and digital filter analysis. Various “small” digital filters are analyzed as examples, particularly those commonly used in audio applications. Matlab programming examples are emphasized for illustrating the use and development of digital filters in practice.

This is a great book. I’ve only worked my way about 1/2 way through it so far, but it gives a perfect balance of practical and theoretical background so real engineers can get real work done. For the areas it covers, this book is much more understandable than Oppenheim And Schafer. For the areas it doesn’t cover, it’s still more understandable though a little less informative. :-)

The great thing about this book is that it gives you pointers to real tools and real implementations for getting work done (i.e. lots of matlab examples, c examples, etc).

It’s a bargain at twice the price.

This book is free online, but I referred to it so many times that I decided to buy it. This book has an excellent flow with relevant matlab (or free octave) examples. It starts from the very basic and proceeds at a nice pace. I used it as a review and was very pleased with its contents. Thank you Julius for an excellent book.

The Car Hacker’s Handbook: A Guide for the Penetration Tester by Craig Smith pdf free download

The Car Hacker’s Handbook: A Guide for the Penetration Tester by Craig Smith pdf free download

Description:

Modern cars are more computerized than ever. Infotainment and navigation systems, Wi-Fi, automatic software updates, and other innovations aim to make driving more convenient. But vehicle technologies haven’t kept pace with today’s more hostile security environment, leaving millions vulnerable to attack.

The Car Hacker’s Handbook will give you a deeper understanding of the computer systems and embedded software in modern vehicles. It begins by examining vulnerabilities and providing detailed explanations of communications over the CAN bus and between devices and systems.

Then, once you have an understanding of a vehicle’s communication network, you’ll learn how to intercept data and perform specific hacks to track vehicles, unlock doors, glitch engines, flood communication, and more. With a focus on low-cost, open source hacking tools such as Metasploit, Wireshark, Kayak, can-utils, and ChipWhisperer, The Car Hacker’s Handbook will show you how to:

  • Build an accurate threat model for your vehicle
  • Reverse engineer the CAN bus to fake engine signals
  • Exploit vulnerabilities in diagnostic and data-logging systems
  • Hack the ECU and other firmware and embedded systems
  • Feed exploits through infotainment and vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems
  • Override factory settings with performance-tuning techniques
  • Build physical and virtual test benches to try out exploits safely

If you’re curious about automotive security and have the urge to hack a two-ton computer, make The Car Hacker’s Handbook your first stop.

Two-Stroke Engine Repair and Maintenance by Paul Dempsey pdf free download

Two-Stroke Engine Repair and Maintenance by Paul Dempsey pdf free download

Description:

Get Peak Performance from Two-Stroke Engines

Do you spend more time trying to start your weed trimmer than you do enjoying your backyard? With this how-to guide, you can win the battle with the temperamental two-stroke engine.

Written by long-time mechanic and bestselling author Paul Dempsey, Two-Stroke Engine Repair & Maintenanceshows you how to fix the engines that power garden equipment, construction tools, portable pumps, mopeds, generators, trolling motors, and more. Detailed drawings, schematics, and photographs along with step-by-step instructions make it easy to get the job done quickly. Save time and money when you learn how to:

  • Troubleshoot the engine to determine the source of the problem
  • Repair magnetos and solid-state systems–both analog and digital ignition modules
  • Adjust and repair float-type, diaphragm, and variable venturi carburetors
  • Fabricate a crankcase pressure tester
  • Fix rewind starters of all types
  • Overhaul engines–replace crankshaft seals, main bearings, pistons, and rings
  • Work with centrifugal clutches, V-belts, chains, and torque converters

Several of my two stroke engine machines are so old that the local repair places would not try to fix them. I purchased TSERM, read it and first tackled a Mantis tiller that did not like to start.

Following the book I replaced the plug, cleaned the carburetor and tested the ignition coil. To accomplish those tasks I purchased a spark plug gap gauge, a compression gauge, and ignition tester. Mechanically everything on the Mantis looked OK, it just would not start. The problem seemed to be the ignition coil. I bought a new coil from Mantis to replace the existing coil. Three pulls on the starter cord and presto everything worked. I adjusted the carburetor and tilled the garden.

Next came the McCullough Titan TD-3000 weed whacker. Again I followed the book and came the same conclusion. It needed a new coil. I had to do some searching to find a supplier. The new coil arrived and was placed in the weed whacker. Third pull and it was off and running.

I started reading Networking for Dummies by Doug Lowe and found it to be an excellent starting point for the just starting networker but a little too basic for me.

Cisco Networking for Dummies is just what I needed; something more advanced than the basics, but not something that would go over my head. It takes you through some of the basics found in Lowe’s book (if you need a brush up) and propels you into the world of frames, packets, Cisco device types, protocols, VLANs, and so much more. Very big book, but VERY helpful to get you going on that second step to networking.

I chose this rating because this is what I needed to advance in my career. This book provides the basics. I’m trying to get certified in Cisco and it helps.
